There are The Burghers of Calais, and then there are the sculpey clay dioramas of Maynard & Jennica: Joan Tate getting drunk on Bloody Marys while waiting for her son; Ana Kaganova stealing a taxi; Maynard meeting Jennica in a Number Six Train; Maynard, in the lobby of a law firm, selling the rights to his film; Jennica at karaoke; Maynard with a nameless kitten; and Ana and Hano, on the 91st Floor of the World Trade Center, trading blue crabs for donkey heads. The artist, H5L5N5, is a wonder.

For the benefit of those who dislike going to see an author read in person, I hereby present: a virtual reading. It was recorded on August 2nd, in my bedroom in Brooklyn; if you listen closely, you can hear my ceiling fan, and, at one point, the children outside screaming over the garden hose.

The Naming of Cats.

After reading Maynard & Jennica, people sometimes feel the need to confess to me the names of their cats. For example. I always welcome such confessions, and have on occasion been tempted to launch an entire kitten blog. (I mean, imagine if, say, Norman Mailer had a kitten blog. Or Don Delillo. Or Martin Amis. "The Martin Amis Kitten Blog," who wouldn't want to see that?)
